Students with Disabilities Preparing for Postsecondary Education: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities

For many students they think about what thier life is going to be like after graduation.. IE going to college, earning a higher edcuation, or maybe even starting there own business. Persons with specail needs may not think of higher education. Maybe a highschool diploma is good enough for them. Well, guess what?? Persons with disabilities have the same rights to attend college and conutine there education just as someone without disabilties. It is proven that persons with disabilties are planning to continue their education in postsecondary schools.
http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/transition.html This website gives a lot of good information about persons with disabilities continuing there education.

  1. Excellent information. The article stated that an IEP and/or a 504 Plan may not be sufficient in proving that a student has a disability. This is surprising to me, especially since I was under the impression that prior to a student with an identified disability leaves school, they must be reevaluated. With the results of the Reeval and IEP, you would think this would be enough to carry accommodations to postsecondary schools. The other thing is, independent evaluations can cost hundreds of dollars. I quess I'm not clear on what exactly postsecondary schools need to prove there is a disability.
